Ever since its inception decades ago the Lebanese university has been the target of a lot of criticism. I am not writing to criticize but after four years of law school I just want to remark on some aspects of this supposedly prestigious institution of higher learning with very low teaching standards. Mind you some of the professors of this university are very successful professionals, high ranking civil servants and judges, but nevertheless this body has been plagued with many diseases , the most dangerous of which is incompetence. It is not bad enough that you have to battle your way through the class to get a good seat so you can here the lecture, but sometimes the lecturerer is below average. English language has never been a priority at the Lebanese University but what I read last week in preparation for my English exam (Lebanese banking systems) was outrageous. Listen to what this professor had to say when defining the solvency ratio: "the capital adequacy of a bank means that the existing things are more than it demands." Can anyone encrypt this phrase for me, please? This is not what anyone expects from his/her professor, right? Another example was the usage of the phrase "before Jesus Christ" to refer to BC. On this one, I have one thing to say: Jesus Christ, can somebody stop this so-called professor? In the final analysis I know I might have sounded mad because I am, especially as I see in front of me a corrupt administration running the university as if it were their own sand box. The LU is indispensable because not all students can afford higher education in costly private universities. Yet this does not mean that LU students have to go through the abuse I went through the past week or even the four years. Reforming this university does not start by cutting down the budget like the Finance Minister Faoud Siniora is demanding nor by uniting all the faculties in one big campus so that the animal farm could grow and political parties would be at each others' throats. True reform begins by getting rid of incompetent teachers.
