Daniel Pipes cites censored Alternative on Campus Watch

  BEIRUT - Alternative Staff

Daniel Pipes' Campus Watch, a website whose main aim is the monitoring of political rhetoric on university campuses, cited the June issue of Alternative as being anti-American.

Pipes, a controversial figure and an ardent apologist of the American neo conservative rhetoric and the Israeli Likud platform, did not only settle for citing the article, but he also censored it.

Thus, the article's lede was changed from: "An ardent defender of Israel, an anti-Arab propagandist and a pretentious expert on Islamic and Middle Eastern affairs, Daniel Pipes has emerged as the top apologist of the American war on terror especially after Sep. 11," to "Islamic and Middle Eastern affairs, Daniel Pipes has emerged as the top apologist of the American war on terror especially after Sep. 11."

In his books and articles, Pipes has focused on what he described as the militancy of political Islam.

Frequently written in an arrogant manner, Pipes' articles continuously give tips and advice to the US administration on how to deal with the Arab world, presumably out of his concern that the region becomes one living in democracy.

On the top of Pipes' priority is democracy in the Middle East and the flow of oil into Israel, according to the website of his think-tank the Middle Eastern Forum (MEF). Pipes serves on the "Special Task Force on Terrorism and Technology" at the Department of Defense.

US President George Bush nominated him for the membership of the board of the federal US Institute for Peace. This provoked vast objection of several American Muslim groups. He recently established Campus Watch which presumably monitors "Middle Eastern studies on campus," and "addresses five problems (namely) analytical failures, the mixing of politics with scholarship, intolerance of alternative views, apologetics, and the abuse of power over students," according to the MEF website.

Even though the Campus Watch website cited the Alternative website's link to the Pipes article, Campus Watch on purpose deleted the part of the article which talked about his websites' webmaster Grayson Levy.

Levy is an Israeli resident of the West Bank settlement of Maale Michmas.
