Communist Students Supplement

Palestinians should recover their state, receive their rights

Regardless of the unjust compromises that dismissed all the legitimate rights, the unresolved Palestinian cause, being the core of the Arab-Israeli conflict, remains at the peak of its instability.

Recent international developments gave leverage to the Israeli right wing in its attempt to undermine the Palestinian Authority institutionally, financially and politically let alone jeopardizing the Palestinian society by following more  aggressive and extremist approach than its predecessors.

Different forms of pressure affect the Palestinian fait accompli which can be summarized by the Israeli, American, the Arab countries' and the Palestinian people's stances on this issue.

The Israeli pressure comes to the fore with the Sharon government's policies of extreme forms of oppression and destruction that aim at liquidating the Palestinian Authority (PA) and scrapping the idea of a viable independent Palestinian state. Sharon intends to return to “pre-Oslo” agreements and create a new fait accompli, which will lead to a weakened and divided Palestinian state at most surrounded by an apartheid wall.

Americans, on the other hand, defend Sharon's policies by giving the excuse of being in the same camp in the war against terrorism.  While the European position in this issue stays weak and ineffective due to the lack of the support of Arab leaders, blind followers of the US, to have an impartial peace broker other than America.

This Arab political bankruptcy, the Arab masses' inability to express full solidarity and the crisis of their leaders including Palestinian President Yasser Arafat and the PA, due to their conflicting interests, is leading the Arab leaders to concede to American demands to further weaken Arafat even if this comes at the expense of the idea of creating a Palestinian state.

The lack of harmony between the PA and some of resistance groups and the lack of a unified strategy to resist Israeli plans is turning the situation even worse.

The only way out for Palestinians comes through the evaluation and reconsideration of their means of struggle and the adoption of a national and democratic dialogue in order to draft a national plan that should receive the backing of all the factions and Arab countries.

Communist Students voice their concern over the right of the Palestinian people to recover their legitimate independent state with Jerusalem as its capital. The group also endorses the right of return of refugees and stands firmly in defending the Palestinian resistance, Israeli oppression, racism and US support.

The group expresses support to Palestinian refugees in Lebanon and understands their urge to win their human and civil rights.
