A regressive Lebanese attitude incarnated in the Lebanese unique divisions along sectarian lines came to the fore during the basketball league's final game between Sagesse and Sporting. Owned by advertisement diva Antoine Showeiri, the Sagesse Club is tainted as a "Maronite" club. For its part, the Sporting Club is known for its Sunni-dominated administration and fans. The last game between the two teams which had earlier drawn by an aggregate of 2-2, was prematurely ended when players ensued in a fight. After the military interfered separating the two teams, Sporting refused to come back to the game unless the Lebanese Federation suspends Sagesse's Elie Mchantaf. Meanwhile, the Sporting fans started chanting slogans such as "Syria" and "Bashar" prompting their counter parts to chant "USA and "Hakim (Lebanese Forces' imprisoned leader Samir Geagea)." |
