Georgetown’s Soc Dems elected, disqualified

Alternative Staff

April 2005

WASHINGTON DC -- Four student members of Georgetown University’s social democratic group, the Soc Dems, won their bid for student elections in mid April, but were later disqualified and appealed before a university commission.

The Soc Dem members, among them Lebanese International Affairs sophomore student Khalil Hibri, were elected to the Student Council.

Their election’s disqualification came, however, on the grounds that one of the candidates had emailed student voters a day prior to election day, urging them to vote for the Soc Dem candidates.

The email, it was said, was not in line with the university’s student election policies.

The disqualified students pleaded not guilty, however, before a university committee.

The representatives said that they awaited for a final decision and that they had a platform loaded with student activities that cannot wait.

The elected student representatives will assume their responsibilities effective the start of the  fall semester in August.
