Masses shout: 'Syria out'

February 2005

BEIRUT -- The number of protesters participating in Hariri's funeral were estimated at being close to one million, by far the biggest number of people in such an event in the past couple of decades.

While Hariri commended a big number of opponents, his funeral proved to be otherwise.

On the day that followed, the different commentaries in Lebanese newspapers perceived of this amassing of people as a popular survey against the Syrian presence in Lebanon.

A week later, some 150,000 protested against Syria as part of Independence Uprising which the opposition announced days after Hariri's murder.

Meanwhile, US President George Bush visited Europe and issued a joint statement with French President Jaque Chirac which called for Syrian withdrawal from Lebanon.
