Sociodems to raise awareness in DC

WASHINGTON DC - Alternative Staff

February 2005

A new group was formed last month at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. It is the first of its kind, in such a campus and is increasingly proving to be an essential part of the University community.

The Social Democrats, are the only clearly Leftist group to have ever have been formed at Georgetown University.

The group, which is comprised of students from around the world, but mostly from the United States, has been received well by the University community, and has already attracted more than a hundred and fifty members.

The initiative behind this group was to promote awareness of Social Democracy and its constituents, which are becoming much needed in this environment.

The current government under President Bush has been consistently restricting the rights of its citizens through its harsh reforms on social security and healthcare.

This has spurred many reactions from some students, who call for Universal Healthcare, and a more considerate approach to the ever-increasing tuition in all universities.

The members have already put forth many of these issues with their activities, through protesting the nationally raised tuition, to organizing discussion panels about U.S. foreign policy initiatives towards Cuba, an issue that led to a great deal of controversy among the students.

The group has been formed on the basis of equal participation, with very limited leadership, which has allowed the highly-motivated members to follow any desired program, causing a great diversity in views and opinions.

The members adhere to a wide spectrum of ideologies ranging for far-left to centrist views, however all of them agree on a need for social justice with a realistic approach, one that is becoming increasingly popular as world governments begin to drift towards the left.

Ideally, the members aim for this group to act as a 'third-way', a historically successful approach, concentrating on the incorporation of some of their ideals into the rigid political frame-work of the United States.
